A Better Pair Of Shoes

I think he might be taller than I was at that age
He's got a smile you can't refuse
And his mama's baby blues
And if he ends up followin' the footsteps that I've made
Well at least he'll have a better pair of shoes

I'll try to teach him what it takes
Maybe he can learn from my mistakes
'll show him that there's better paths to choose
But if he hears that distant drum
That called me down the road when I was young
He might walk a lonely mile or two At least he'll have a better pair of shoes

There's a time for planting seeds
< Early in the spring
While the oak has tender leaves
And new birds try their wings
I know someday I'll be gone
So like the morning dew
<I'll try to pass something worth while along
While I'm passing through

I've got an old picture of my dad when he was young
It's one I've scanned and tried to fix
I'd guess he was five or six
It's a good reminder to me of where I come from
A poor old family livin' in the sticks

I can't make the valleys rise
And mountains rarely compromise
I can't hold up every bridge
Or see what lies beyond the road ahead
But I'll sure help him where I can
So someday when that boy becomes a man
He'll see I've made a good down payment on his dues
So he could have a better pair of shoes
